Locals who rent a house or room are most likely those who are posted overseas for long periods, couples saving to buy their own home, or singles who want their own private space. If you’re thinking of renting a place, decide on a few things first before you start looking around.

Location

Do you prefer living amidst greenery or in the heart of the city? Take into account your family members’ needs such as schools, distance to workplaces and access to public transport.

Size

Will it be a room for every child or will they share? What about a maid’s room? A bigger place would also mean more work has to be put in for upkeep.

Facilities and amenities

Are you a dedicated gym-goer or swimmer who makes full use of a condominium’s facilities or are you an occasional jogger? Are shops and markets within easy reach for grocery shopping?

Duration of Lease

It’s usually easier for the lease period to be at least 12 months so the landlord doesn’t have to keep looking for new tenants.

Level of furnishing

The house could be fully or partially furnished, or unfurnished. A partially furnished property generally comes with lighting, washing machine, air-conditioning and basic kitchen appliances. A fully furnished property usually includes things like beds, sofa and television set.

Budget

Think about how much you’re willing to spend on rental. Don’t forget to include other expenditure such as utilities, telephone, cable and Internet connection charges.
